The Diablo is a mid-engined high-performance car built by Italian automaker Lamborghini. In 1985, Lamborghini began development of a replacement for the Countach model, stating that its top speed had to be at least 315 km/h (196 mph). The design of the car was contracted to Marcello Gandini, who had designed the Countach and the Miura. However, when Chrysler bought the company in 1987, it commissioned its design team to execute a redesign, smoothing out the traditional sharp edges and corners of the original design. Gandini's original design would later be realized in the Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
